Schnauzers

By Lela Flaherty

Miniature Schnauzers make excellent house pets as they quickly learn new rules. They are affectionate and do cute things such as make a woo woo sound when excited. My schnauzer Tuppy used to make a woo woo sound when he wanted to greet someone he recognized while we were out on a walk. Guess it was his way of saying " hello, how are you today ? " They do need a lot of grooming, such as weekly brushing and a trip to the groomer for a hair cut about once per month. Tuppy used to get all fuzzy like a little teddy bear when his hair grew out, but since I lived in Texas then, it was too hot and it would make him smelly. He was normally a very good natured dog, but would nip at me when I used scissors on him, because I am just not a very good groomer and would sometimes poke him by mistake, plus he ended up with bald patches everywhere, so I left the hair cuts to the professionals. ( I have tried cutting my own hair before too and the stylist gave me the same advice then too, leave it to the professionals ! )
His beard used to get really nasty and stained up, but a good and safe way to clean that up is to simply use a little lemon juice and water, plus feed them out of a smaller bowl to keep their beard out of the food. (If only it were that easy to keep your husband's beard clean!)
Believe me, schnauzers are worth the effort. Tuppy was such a loving pet, and he was always friendly and sweet to everyone unless they were a bad person. The only person he ever growled at was my neighbor's boyfriend. He kept standing at my door growling at him while he was knocking on my neighbor's door. I could not understand why, but later that night, the neighbor knocked on my door and asked if she could use the phone to call the police as her boyfriend has just beat her up. I let her of course, and then understood my dog had a gift of sensing things that we humans sometimes lack. He was so intelligent that even though he never scratched on my door to let me know he wanted in as I always went out with him, he watched my cousin's dog scratch on their door to be let in, then promptly walked to their door and scratched to be let in also! So old dogs CAN learn new tricks. I know any breed can be intelligent, but I got Tuppy when he was full grown and had been living in a barn for a year, and he was already house trained, I never had to train him, he just knew! He also never chewed on anything, you could leave shoes or anything out, he never bothered them, and though schnauzers have a reputation for being natural barkers, he never barked unless it was necessary, he was generally very quiet. He was my first schnauzer, and I am very impressed by the breed after my experience.
